The Leader of the JVP Somawansa Amarasinghe challenges President Mahinda Rajapakse to reveal the secret deals he is having with Thaksin Shinawatra, former Prime Minister of Thailand, who was deposed from the post but has been brought to Sri Lanka secretly. Mr. Amarasinghe said Shinawatra had come with five others in his private plane to Sri Lanka on the 12th and has had discussions with Mahinda Rajapakse at Anuradhapura and in Colombo. Mr. Amarasinghe said there is a suspicion that Shinawatra’s money is being used for the election campaign of UPFA presidential candidate Mahinda Rajapakse. He pointed out that when Cambodia attempted to have connections with Thaksin Shinawatra Thailand took measures to stop diplomatic relations with that country.
Mr. Amarasinghe addressing a press conference held yesterday (19th) further said, “There is suspicion whether LTTE money is being used for the election. KP is being held in the country. Why isn’t he produced before a court of law? Where is he kept? The President should reveal this to the country. Thailand is a place where KP has been accepted. It is when Thaksin Shinawatra was the prime minister that KP carried out mass scale arm deals in that region. This was done with the knowledge of Thaksin Shinawatra. Thaksin is a very rich man. There could be LTTE money with him.
There are very friendly relations between Sri Lanka and Thailand. This secret deal would have an effect on this. What Rajapakse is having with Thaksin are not diplomatic deals but secret deals. Now all exchange regulations have been relaxed. Anyone can take any amount of money from the country. Hence, suspicious money dealings are taking place.
If such things are allowed to take place our country would become a rogue country. It would be a blemish on the reputation of our country. Mr. Rajapakse has no right to drag this country towards such a status,” pointed out Mr. Amarasinghe.
JVP Parliamentarian Bimal Ratnayake said, “All LTTE ships that were destroyed by our Navy sailed from the Thailand – Indonesia sea area. KP used this region for his arm dealings. Most of these dealings were carried out when Thaksin Shinawatra was the prime minister.
Thaksin Shinawatra came to Sri Lanka in his private plane. He did not come here in a regular plane illegally. It is necessary to get permission for a private plane to land at Katunayake International Airport. There hasn’t been any request for such a landing by the Embassy of Thailand. Hence, we ask whether this request was made by Chamal Rajapakse, the brother of the President who is also the Minister of Aviation or was it President’s relative who is the Chairman of the Aviation Services Company.
Also Thaksin Shinawatra doesn’t have a diplomatic passport. Any person who doesn’t have a diplomatic passport is not allowed to enter the country through the VIP lounge. Then who reserved this area for him?
Also, a large amount of money has to be paid to park a plane in the airport. However, no such fee has been charged for this plane.
As a result of the secret dealings with Thaksin Shinawatra, who is a personal friend of KP, the officials of our Embassy in Thailand have been inconvenienced. According to very reliable sources the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka has apologized to the Foreign Minister of Thailand by phone.”
