During the past 11 months of this year 44 people have died due to lightening. Most of the deaths due to lighting – 20 - had occurred during the month of April. 9 have died from lightening during October.
A large number of people injured in lightening were treated in hospitals said an official from the Ministry of Health.
Meteorologists say the frequency and intensity of lightning have risen at present and it could be due to global warming and climate change. The Department of Meteorology has asked the public to be alert as lightening occurs more frequently in countries near the Equator. Sri Lanka too falls into this category.
