Cuban Solidarity Conference in Colombo on 20th & 21st

The 6th Asia Pacific Regional Conference of the Cuban Solidarity Movement will be held in Colombo says the Parliamentarian of the JVP Sunil Handunneththi.

Speaking at a press conference held in Colombo yesterday (16th) Mr. Handunneththi said, “The 6th Asia Pacific Regional Conference of the Cuban Solidarity Movement will be held at the Centre for Banking Studies in Rajagiriya, Colombo on the 20th and 21st of this month. Also, a public function will be held at Yahalakale Estate where Comrade Che Guevara planted a tree when he visited Sri Lanka.

We know that Cuba is a country that is against imperialism and that strengthens socialism. Cuba, despite illegal sanctions imposed on it by imperialists led by the USA, has overcome all challenges and has become a model for countries and rulers who have knelt before imperialists.

The intention of holding the summit is to demand imperialists and the USA to remove sanctions against Cuba and to release the ‘Cuban Five’. We all know that the USA unjustifiably detains five Cubans. There are political prisoners in our country as well.  However, these five are the symbol of all political prisoners who have been detained for the reason of standing against imperialism.  Hence, we hold this summit to demand lifting of sanctions against Cuba imposed by the USA and the release of the ‘Cubans Five.’

120 delegates from 22 countries will participate at the summit.  About 200 local representatives are also expected to participate. All left parties in Sri Lanka represent the National Preparatory Committee. We believe the 6th Asia Pacific Regional Conference of the Cuban Solidarity Movement will be a success.”

Minister Dinesh Gunawardene also participated.
