It is reported that the Minister of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing & Common Amenities Wimal Weerawansa has reprimanded in an insulting manner a mother of a soldier who had sacrificed his life for the country when she visited him regarding a house to be given to her under the ‘Jana Sewana’ hundred thousand housing project.
Ms. Vijitha Kumari Nawaratne, a ‘Ranaviru’ mother living at Kurunegala speaking to the media said after her son Corporal Panamaldeniya who was attached to the 10th Infantry Regiment of SL Army died while in active duty in Pudukudiruppu area in Mullaithivu on 22nd February, 2009 she lost the rented house they were living.
She said she had to undergo many difficulties after the death of her son and then received a letter from Ranaviru Seva Authority that she would be given a house. Later she received a letter with Minister Weerawansa’s signature regarding the house.
Since she got this letter she visited the Ministry every month and met officials. As the matter was getting delayed she went to see the minister regarding the house and when she met him he had said, “Are you asking me to give birth to houses?” and reprimanded her with the most insulting manner.
