Despite President Mahinda Rajapaksa stating in election meetings that instructions would be given to postpone recovering cultivation loans until the next harvesting season, it is reported that no measures have been taken to implement such a move. It is reported that Bank of Ceylon and People’s Bank have recovered loans given to farmers for cultivation from the insurance compensations they have received.
Farmers who had been insured were paid their compensation in cheques at a ceremony headed by the Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena. When farmers took them to the bank to be cashed their cultivation loans were recovered. The insurance compensation cheques could be cashed only in state banks. When farmers questioned bank officials they had been told that bank officials had not received any instructions or a gazette notification instructing them not to recover cultivation loans.
