Norochcholai failed due to overuses without maintenance – Chinese engineers

The Engineers of the Chinese firm who have arrived for the restoration of the Lakvijaya Power Plant at Norochcholai have said the breakdown of the plant is due to over-utilization of the plant without annual maintenance.

Zhao Wenxue, the deputy chief engineer of Northwest Electric Power Design Institute which designed the power plant stated that the power plant had been forced to work beyond its required limits and keep supplying electricity to the whole country.

The capacity of the power plant is 300 megawatts. Only two phases have been completed at present and the third is expected to be completed by July 2014.

Or is it more of a newly built Yangmingtan Bridge story.

Chinese engineer has contradicted earlier explanation that the breakdown is due to salt deposition in main supply lines. It is reported, this power plant is a secondhand one that had been used in China for more than a decade. The technology used in this coal plant is 20 years old and outdated. Though it supplies 300mw power to the national grid accumulated cost per unit surpasses that of a diesel plant. Since the technology used is outdated the environmental pollution may also be unacceptably high. Ministry of environment is busy doing vehicle emission tests but turns blind eye to the prime culprit of environmental pollution in sri lanka. The ministry of environment deliberately ignoring the impact because this plant has a short life of less than 5 years.
