Govt.-JVP discuss forming broad front!

[26th July 2006 -14:00 S.L.T]

The JVP has come forward to form a broad front to confront the present situation the country has come up with as a result of the national question. Already the JVP has begun talks with President Mahnda Rajapakse and the SLFP regarding this.

This was revealed at the media meeting held by the JVP today. JVP Leader Mr. Somawansa Amarasinghe, General Secretary Mr. Tilvin Silva, Information Secretary Mr. Wimal Weerawansa and Members of Political Bureau Messrs Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Lal Kanthe were present at the meeting.

Mr. Somawansa Amarasinghe addressing the media said the talks are held not only with the Government. However, the President and the Government have a very big role to play. That’s why it was decided to talk to the Government first he said. He said future moves would be taken according to the success of the present talks. Mr. Amarasinghe said at the special convention of the party held on the 5th of this month it had been proposed that a broad front should be established to find a solution for the national question. A statement on the present situation of the country was distributed to the media at the meeting.

In the statement issued by the JVP it is stated that, “When all these facts and various other factors are considered the picture the JVP foresee is that Sri Lanka has been subjected to a combined assault by the local and international conspirators.”

The statement further states, “The JVP believes that the broadest peoples’ power consisting of all political parties, other organizations and individuals should be established without any delay to combat this situation.”

Mr. Amarasinghe speaking to the media said his party has a serious criticism for the way the UNP was acting in a situation where the country is faced with a critical situation. When Akashi said that foreign forces should be deployed here it was the UNP which approved it first. When it was said that Sri Lanka was a ‘failed state’ again it was the UNP which agreed with that. The Leader of the JVP pointed out that the UNP acts as a party to the conspiracy against the Motherland.
