The
attempt by wanni
tiger organization to bring pressure on
GoSL to get
their organization disarmed, claiming
that it was a condition in the CFA
signed between Mr.
Ranil
Wickremasinghe, then Prime
Minister of the former UNP government
and Velupillai
Prabakaran
on 22nd February, 2002, is
due to the fact that
Tamileela
Makkal
Viduthalai
Pulikal –
TMVP (Karuna
faction of the tiger organization) has
become a major challenge for
wanni tigers
stated a spokesperson of
Karuna
faction of the tiger organization when ‘Lankatruth’
inquired about their stand on the
forthcoming Geneva talks.
The spokesperson
pointed out that when they broke away
from tiger organization
Velupillai
Prabakaran
said it was an internal matter
of the organization and they would
resolve it. However, they have become so
strong, wanni
tiger organization is now trying to get
the Government involved in disarming
them claiming that it was a
pre-requisite as stated in clause 1.8 in
the CFA said the spokesperson.
However, clause 1.8
states, “Tamil paramilitary groups shall
be disarmed by the GOSL by D-Day + 30
days at the latest. The GOSL shall offer
to integrate individuals in these units
under the command and disciplinary
structure of the GOSL armed forces for
service away from the Northern and
Eastern
Province.”
Now what is
interesting is that they did not exist
when the agreement was signed or before
it stated the spokesperson. Moreover,
their leader Colonel
Karuna (Vinayagamoorthy
Muralitharan)
participated in four rounds of talks
that were held between then UNP
government and the LTTE. Their party
cannot be called a paramilitary group as
well stated the spokesperson who
preferred to remain anonymous claiming
that they were not armed or maintained
by the Government. Hence, demanding that
they should be disarmed by the
Government is not pertinent said the
spokesperson adding that tiger
organization is bent on getting the
Government involved in getting their
party disarmed as they had become a
major threat to
wanni tiger organization.
