Tilvin asks Susil not to use ‘betel leaf’

[7th February 2006 - 01.:35 S..L.T]

JVP General Secretary Mr. Tilvin Silva, in a letter,  has requested UPFA General Secretary Minister Susil Premajayanthe not toget his party to  contest under the UPFA as his party intends contesting the forthcoming local government elections under the ‘bell’ symbol. However, even when this letter was received yesterday afternoon Mr. Susil Premajayanthe had taken measures to appoint representatives of UPFA on district basis say reports.

A senior leader of the SLFP answering our query said they would have to contest under UPFA. The senior SLFP leader said as Mr. D.M. Jayaratne, General Secretary of the People’s Alliance is out of the country they would not be able to contest under PA. “We would let the JVP know about this, I’m sure they would understand our position,” said this spokesman.

The JVP will contest local government elections under the ‘bell’ symbol. This is the first time the JVP is contesting under the ‘bell’ symbol after General Elections of 2001.
