JVP protests to the President regarding GoSL’s support for IAEA resolution!

JVP has taken steps to protest against the support given by GoSL to European Union sponsored resolution by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to report on Iran against its nuclear programme. General Secretary of the JVP Mr. Tilvin Silva is to send a letter of protest to President Mahinda Rajapakse explaining the JVP’s stand on this issue and protesting against the stand taken by GoSL said a JVP spokesman.

JVP’s view is that despite the fact that western world has objected to Iran’s nuclear programme, those countries have not got any approval from other countries to carry out their nuclear programmes. JVP’s stand is that GoSL shouldn’t have supported the IAEA resolution approved by the UK, the USA, Russia, China and France, the permanent members of Security Council.

According to reports the EU has first forwarded a resolution which would allow embargo against Iran. However, Russia, China, the other Permanent members of Security Council had changed the composition of the resolution before approving it. 27 countries have voted for this resolution. Cuba, Venezuela and Syria were the only countries that had voted against. Five countries including South Africa and Indonesia have abstained from voting.

Answering our query, a Government spokesman said GoSL supported the resolution as it was not intended to place any embargo on Iran. However, JVP in its letter to the President tries to indicate that GoSL has made a serious mistake by agreeing to a resolution against another sovereign country. JVP spokesman said the letter will reach the President by the 7th.
