Members of farmer community throughout the island will join the ‘People’s Protest’ organized by the JVP in Colombo on the 23rd to protest against the government that torments people in the country by raising prices of goods and services and levy various kinds of taxes on the people says the National Organize of All Ceylon Farmers Federation Namal Karunaratna.
He said this at a special press conference held at Dambulla today (8th).
He said, “The Ranil – Maithri government, despite making many promises before coming to power, has broken all promises and now has become an oppressive government that oppresses all including the farmer community. Vegetable farmers have not been able to sell their vegetables as the government has failed to find a solution for their issues and is making the vegetable farmers frustrated which drive them away from vegetable cultivation. Paddy farmer too are confronted with a serious issue. The guaranteed price for paddy has not been increased for the last few years and the farmer has to sell his produce for a meager sum. Sugarcane farmer too is being driven away from cultivation due to the callous treatment they get from authorities.
Farmers have had discussions with the government to find solutions for the issues confronted by the farmers but no solutions have been found so far. Hence the farmers throughout the country have decided to join the ‘People’s Protest’ organized by the JVP on the 23rd and they invite all farmers in the country to join the protest and show the government that people cannot be deceived anymore.”
