CID has taken into custody three Armu personnel in connection with the abduction and assault on journalist Keith Noyahr that occurred in 2008. The three Army personnel including an Army Major were arrested today (18th) morning.
They are to be produced before Mt. Lavinia Magistrates Court after recording statements from them.
Journalist Keith Noyahr was the defense correspondence of ‘The Nation’ when he was abducted by a group while travelling to his home at Dehiwela from office in March, 2008. He was assaulted and later abandoned near his home.
During Mahinda Rajapaksa regime many journalists were murdered and attacked and media institutions were attacked and set on fire. The regime was condemned for the murder of the Chief Editor of ‘Sunday Leader’ Lasantha Wickremetunga, attacks on Journalist Keith Noyahr, Chief Editor of ‘Rivira’ Upali Tennekone, Namal Perera of Sri Lanka Newspapers, Poddala Jayantha of Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association (SLWJA). All journalists and the general public criticized the government for the manner legal action was taken regarding such incidents.
