The government was forced to bring a bill to abolish SAITM illegal degree institution as a result of struggles carried out with the mediation of the students’ movement, trade unions and progressive masses in the country. However, the judgment given yesterday (21st) shows there is a conspiracy to renew the illegal degree shop says the convener of Medical Faculty Students’ Action Committee Didula Amarasinghe.
Speaking at a press conference held by the Medical Faculty Students’ Action Committee yesterday Mr Amarasinghe said the government should implement the decision taken to abolish SAITM illegal degree shop and if a conspiracy is carried out to legalize the illegal degree shop the government will have to face the consequences.
He said the student movement, trade unions and the progressive masses in the country agitated against the illegal degree shop since 2009 and due to their struggle the government had to give in and abolish the illegal shop despite the Rajapaksa regime and the Ranil – Maithri regime did everything to keep the illegal shop.
He reminded that the parents of medical students had to commence a fast unto death to demand the government to abolish SAITM and government representatives who had visited where the fast unto death was being carried out had to promise that SAITM would be abolished.
At the press conference issues confronted by students at Rajarata and Eastern universities too were discussed.
