The parents should be concerned about the future of the education of their children as the government is scheming to hand it over to those individuals who do not hesitate to get the services of the underworld and thugs says the President of Lanka Teacher Services Union (LTSU) Dhammika Alahapperuma.
Mr Alahapperuma made this observation at a press conference held by the LTSU after he was discharged from the hospital where he was being treated for an injury he received at an agitation held by teachers’ unions opposite the Ministry of Education to protest against arbitrary appointments in the education sector. Those who had got political appointments joined thugs to attack the teachers and principals of schools who were agitating against government’s move.
The strikes and trade union action carried out by LTSU had been highly successful and if the government doesn’t withdraw the arbitrary appointments the trade unions would not hesitate to take action to boycott all national examinations said Mr Alahapperuma. He said already trade unions in the education sector are having discussions regarding the future course of action by teachers’ trade unions.
He called upon the IGP to immediately arrest the thugs that attacked him and other participants at the agitation and hold an impartial inquiry and pointed out that already a complaint has been lodged regarding the incident in a police station.
The President of LTSU said the President should be held responsible regarding the illegal political appointments and pointed out that the appointments have been given to lists produced by the UNP.
