Certain petrol shed owners ask fishermen who visit their establishments to get fuel with the coupon given to them by the government as a subsidy for fuel ridicule them saying to get fuel from Parliament and the government should take the responsibility of demeaning the fisherfolk says the National Organizer of the All Ceylon Fishermen’s Federation Rathna Gamage.
Speaking at Pitipana in Negombo yesterday (14th) Mr Gamage said, “A State Minister had said the agitation held by fishermen at Hambanthota to protest against the increase in fuel prices was a mean act. We would like to ask whether increasing fuel prices is a good act. Everybody including the fishermen has been affected due to the increase in fuel prices and the fishermen have been worst affected.
Small fishing boats would need 25 to 30 litres of fuel a day. Kerosene has been increased by 130%. As a result, those who use a small boat would have to spend Rs.15000 more.”
“We would like to ask the government whether the formula is to increase fuel prices and inconvenience the people,” asked Mr Gamage.
Black flags have been hoisted at ‘Lellama’ fisheries harbour in Negombo and a signature-collecting campaign for a petition against the increase in fuel prices was carried out.
