The preparedness of the government to combat natural disasters including floods is not adequate complained JVP Parliamentarian Bimal Rathnayake participating in the Parliamentary debate held yesterday (23rd) under the National Environmental Bill.
Mr Rathnayake further said in addition to getting allocations the government should use public money with a plan and usefully.
Speaking further the JVP Parliamentarian said, “Allocating money for flood relief is not the only task at the moment. The money allocated is not the private money of theirs. There are other things that have to be done before money is distributed.
Rathnapura goes under floods every year. However, not a single boat has been made ready to be used when there are floods in the area. Is this the preparedness of the government? Bringing in environmental laws would not be useful if they are not correctly implemented. It is necessary to have genuine politicians and official to implement environmental laws without any frauds.
A large number of acres in Embilipitiya forest are wiped off to build various channels. A former Army chief is involved in this. It should be investigated.
The communal politicians who are destroying Wilpaththu forest too should be investigated. No one says those who are displaced should not be given land. They should be given land. However, Wilpaththu should not be allowed to be destroyed on the pretext of distributing land to the landless.”
