At a discussion held with the Commissioner of Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya, it has been revealed that 80 persons who have been accused of various crimes and offences and are not eligible to be nominated have been put forward as candidates for the forthcoming local government election says the Information Secretary of the JVP, Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath.
The discussion was held between the Commissioner of Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya and representatives of political parties at the Elections Secretariat at Rajagiriya yesterday (11th).
Speaking after the discussion Mr. Herath said, “The Commissioner made an extensive clarification regarding the rules and regulations of holding the forthcoming local government election. He said nearly 80 persons who have been accused of various crimes and offences and are not eligible to be nominated have been identified among the candidates nominated by political parties. As such, their being elected as a councillor would be an issue. It is the responsibility of those who are in the legal sector to take legal action regarding them.
The facilities the disabled persons get at the polling centre were also discussed. The officer in charge of the centre helps the disabled person to mark his vote. The agents of political parties in the centre could request the officer in charge to change the person who helps the disabled person to vote said the Commissioner.”
