The OIC of Sapugaskanda Police who is accused of assaulting a youth and the JVP Western Provincial Councilor Dr. Ashoka Ranwala has been transferred on orders from the Ministry of Law & Order and Southern Development Sagala Ratnayaka to the IGP until investigations regarding the incident are completed.
The Minister has given the order on a report made available by Colombo Crimes Division and the order has been referred to the Elections Commission as an election has been announced.
The Provincial Councilor Dr. Ashoka Ranwala was brutally assaulted by the OIC and other police personnel when he requested Sapugaskanda Police to hospitalize a youth from Heyyanthuduwa area who had been inhumanly assaulted by the Police.

Speaker convenes party leaders’ meeting to get date for debate on bond report
The Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has convened a special party leader s meeting on Tuesday (9th).
It is reported that the Speaker has convened the meeting considering the request made to him by the Chief Whip of the Opposition and JVP Leader Anura Dissanayaka to have a debate on the report by Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) into the Bond Issuance of the Central Bank.
92 of 336 complaints received by FCID investigated – cases filed for only 13 of them
From the 336 complaints received by the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) from its inception 92 investigations were completed by October last year and were sent to the Attorney General’s Department but only 13 cases have been filed states police.
This was stated by the police on a request made under the Right to Information Act. According to the FCID, the Attorney General has filed 12 cases in High Court and one in Magistrates Court.
FCID states the majority of the complaints it received were regarding offences that could be categorized under Money Laundering Act No.05 of 2006 and offences under Public Property Act (No. 12 of 1982).
Video: Police break 4 teeth of youth
A group of policemen that had gone for an inquiry has assaulted a youth breaking four of his teeth say reports.
The group of policemen had tied legs and hands of Chandana Rupasinghe, the youth from Ankumbura in Kandy, before assaulting him inhumanly.
The police team had arrived at his residence on a complaint by the youth’s sister-in-law who had had a row with the youths brother. The youth had been assaulted when he protested the police removing the belongings of eh sister-in-law.
UNP underworld councillor gets bail
The UNP Councilor in the Western Provincial Council Randir Rodrigo together with 4 others who were arrested and remanded after a shootout between an underworld gang and a team of STF personnel attached to Divulapitiya Police were released on bail yesterday (5th).
A live hand grenade and two pistols were seized from their possession at the time of the arrest and they were remanded after being produced before Negombo Magistrates Court.
Negombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja ordered Rs. 500,000 personal bail and Rs. 10,000 cash bail for each of them and the suspects were ordered to appear at the Organized Crime Branch once a week. Also, they were banned from leaving the country.
Assaulted youth’s father talks to media regarding police assault on Dr. Ranwala
The JVP Provincial Councilor Ashoka Ranwala who complained to the police regarding an inhuman assault on a youth taken to the Sapugaskanda Police was himself brutally assaulted by the OIC of the crimes section of the police station. The father of the youth has made a statement to the media in connection with the incident.
The father says a police team that suddenly broke into his house took away his son after handcuffing him. When he went to the police he was not allowed to see his son and when he went the following morning he found that his son had been inhumanly assaulted.
He made the JVP Councilor Dr. Ashoka Ranwala aware regarding the state of his son and Dr. Ranwala who went to the police station and observed the condition of the son requested the police to admit him the hospital immediately.
At the time the OIC had said the youth would be hospitalized by later the youth had been taken before Court and had been remanded without hospitalizing him.
Dr. Ranwala who came to know that the youth had been remanded had gone to the police station and had asked why the youth had not been hospitalized. The OIC and several other police personnel who had got angry had inhumanly assaulted Dr. Ranwala.
Later, with the mediation of senior police officer, Dr. Ranwala was taken before the JMO and was hospitalized. At the moment he is being treated in hospital under police arrest and the youth has been remanded.
Dr. Ranwala did not behave in an unruly manner in the police station and never obstructed duties of any police officer emphasizes youth’s father adding Dr. Ranwal had asked the police to hospitalize the youth considering his condition and take whatever legal action that was necessary.

Son-in-law’s company further suspended
The Monetary Board of the Central Bank has extended the suspension on controversial primary dealer Perpetual Treasury for a period of six months from yesterday (5th).
Acting in terms of the regulations made under the Registered Stock and Securities Ordinance and the Local Treasury Bills Ordinance the Monetary Board of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka decided on the 4th to extend the suspension of Perpetual Treasuries Limited from carrying on the business and activities of a primary dealer for a period of six months with effect from 4.30 p.m. on 05th January 2018 in order to continue the investigations being conducted by the Central Bank.
The suspension on Perpetual Treasuries was first implemented on 6th July 2017 for a period of six months.
