The signing of nomination papers by the JVP for the second round of the forthcoming Local Government election commenced at the head office of the JVP chaired by the General Secretary of the party Tilvin Silva.
The leader of the group of candidates for Colombo District from the JVP Specialist Doctor Ranil Jayasena and several others representing the district were present.
Mr. Silva said, “All the nomination papers put forward by the JVP for the 93 councils for which nominations have been called for have been accepted when some of the nomination papers submitted by other parties have been rejected. We’ll be getting the other nomination papers completed tomorrow and the day after. We feel that we are in a position to win this election as we have been prepared for it and could hand over the nomination papers without any hiccup.
Those who have been in power and ask for power again have been unable to present correct nomination papers and people wonder as to how they could administer councils if they cannot get a nomination paper correctly completed.
We believe that the local government election is an opportunity for a change. The local government councils were full of corruption, waste and fraud and they did not serve the people. Now, they should be transformed into councils that are without corruption, fraud or waste and are responsible for the people, They should be councils friendly to the people.
We have been able to filed teams of candidates to councils throughout the island who would dedicate themselves without any corruption or fraud.
We are getting down all our candidates for a summit to be held in Colombo on the 17th. We hope to introduce a code of conduct for the candidates, to get an oath from the candidates to honestly and voluntarily carry out their tasks in the councils.
We would like to tell the people that it is necessary to change the political culture in the country. This dirty political culture should be changed. This change should start from the village. We have put forward very good teams to help the country to make this change.
We have put forward a good team to Colombo Municipality. The leader of the team is Specialist Doctor Ranil Jayasena. We invite the people to give the JVP an opportunity to develop the village and thereby bring in a change to the country.”
Specialist Doctor Ranil Jayasena said, “The people in the country are dazzled due to the kind of politics in the country. Hence, a new political culture is necessary for the country. The country is sick and doctors have a part to play and have been pushed towards politics. As the JVP is not accused of any fraud or corruption the people could choose what side they should take. We would put forward our programme to develop the country so that it would be easy for the people to choose from the parties that are contesting the election.”
