The Commission of Elections has decided to accept nominations for 93 local government councils for the local government election.
Accordingly, it has been decided to accept nominations for the 93 councils for 14 days from the 27th of November.
This was stated by the Chairman of the Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya at a press briefing held after a special meeting of the Elections Commission.
The Chairman said the Court of Appeal imposed a stay order against the Gazette on delimitation but the stay order is effective only on 203 councils.
As such, elections could be held for 133 local councils but due to printing mistakes in the Gazette issued there is an obstacle to have elections for 40 councils stated the Chairman of the Commission.
The Chairman said as there is no obstacle to have the election for 93 local councils elections for these councils will be held and all Returning Officers have been instructed to receive nominations for the 93 councils for 14 days from the 27th.
