“We, of the JVP, have taken a decision to give to those who have a good understanding of our society, who could contribute to create a new political culture, who are not concerned excessively with oneself but cherish collectiveness, oppose frauds, corruption and waste and have the knowledge and will to change this society to a righteous one an opportunity to contest the forthcoming elections in addition to candidates of the JVP. We have invited them to rally with us to change this political culture of vagrants and become candidates of our party,” said the General Secretary of the JVP Tilvin Silva speaking at the 19th National Convention of the Lanka Teacher Services Union (LTSU) held on the 13th in Colombo.
Speaking further Mr. Tilvin Silva said, “Today our society is gripped by an economic, political and cultural crisis. Everything including education, religious institutions have degenerated. The society has to be reconstructed. The country is trapped in an enormous debt mountain. Every Sri Lankan Owes Rs 500,000. The price of rice is Rs.100, coconut has gone up to rs.100 and the price of gas has been increased by Rs. 110. The cost of living has gone up and life has become difficult. In addition, the burden of taxes and fines has made it more difficult.
The service production in the country has broken down and education is in a massive crisis. As a result, private education has soared. The children of ordinary folk are being distanced from education. Health services have broken down. When people suffer from a grave illness they have to plead for contributions. Stealing, frauds and corruption have reached enormous heights. Those in the government themselves plunder banks. In the past, the talk of thefts was in millions but now they talk of stealing billions. When petty thieves go to prison large-scale thieves go home. The ‘Sil’ clothes fraud of the likes of Lalith Weeratunga was Rs. 600 million. When sentenced to three years in prison within a week an appeal is filed, gets bail and go home. Ordinary folk have to linger in prisons for years without being able to get bail. There was an international warrant for the woman said to be a secretary of Namal Rajapaksa. She was arrested, brought before Court and got bail within a day. There is no talk about the ‘Siriliya’ fraud. The message for the people is to commit massive thefts without attempting petty thefts.
The situation confronted by this society should be changed. This change cannot be done only by the involvement of trade unions and a political party. The ordinary folk should come forward. The crisis in our country today is that the majority of the people are silent; they are immersed in illusions and have been deceived. The people see the crisis but move towards a wrong direction. Our country cannot raise itself from the precipice until a majority of the people realizes this truth. The people should be released from the illusion. The teachers in our country have an important task to perform in this regard. American writer Mark Twain once said, “It’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.” The UNP and the SLFP are carrying out this easy task. The JVP is engaged in the arduous task of getting people to see the truth. It is a very difficult task but we would continue to do it. The teachers in our country should help to drive away illusions from the society and become a group that brings truth to the society.
There was an illusion created that Mahinda Rajapaksa was a patriot. In 2007 Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, as the Defense Minister of Mahinda Rajapaksa administration, signed a defense pact with the USA to assist the USA at the time of war. No patriot can sign such a pact. Rajapaksa brothers who talk about patriotism continue to be US citizens. Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa removes the Army camp at Gall Face and gives the seven-acre land to Shangri-La company. Can a patriot do so? Some do not understand this contradiction. It is said that Mahinda Rajapaksa is a good Buddhist. However, his children had car races opposite the Temple of the Tooth despite Mahanayakas opposed it. Karuna Amman who bombed the Temple of the tooth was made a vice president of the SLFP. The ‘Viharadevalagam’ (temple) Act was changed to make it possible for the nephew of Mahinda Rajapaksa to become the ‘Nilame’ of Katharagama Devale. How can such a person become a good Buddhist?
A viewpoint was created that Maithri is a simple president. Now Maithri has adorned Mahinda’s garbs and has started wasting people’s money. He gets his daughter to write books about him. While Mahinda – Maithri – Ranil have deals among themselves, slanders are spread that there is a deal between the JVP and the UNP. Some believe these slanders. As such, a majority of the people in the country does not realize the truth but go behind illusions.
Today our society is in a colossal crisis. There is no other answer than liberating the country from this tragedy. For this, the society should be educated. Good citizens should be made for the society. A citizen that is learned, who could easily recognize good and bad, who cannot be deceived easily, should be created. This process should begin with children. This is why we say the teachers in the country have a great task to perform. The minds of the children should be nourished with distinctiveness and they could be able to know the truth from lies, good from the bad so that they would grow up to be citizens who would change this society to a virtuous one. We all should come forward to make the society a virtuous one.
Today politics in the country has degenerated. The politician has become a thief a villain; a rapist and a fraudster. The JVP as a political party is free of all such evils. The society needs a political culture that is free from theft, wickedness and personal gains. It needs a political process that serves the society. The JVP has fulfilled this task.
This is why we say good, proficient, able, skilled people should be brought to the political arena. The chance for undesirable elements from coming to politics should be stopped. People with knowledge and intelligence should come to politics. Teachers, state employees who serve the society should take politics to their hands instead of allowing rapists, those who force teachers to kneel down or tie government employees to trees to do politics in the country.
Now, a good opportunity has arrived for such a transformation. The local government election will be held soon. Candidates from grassroots level have got an opportunity. We, of the JVP, have taken a decision to give to those who have a good understanding of our society, who could contribute to create a new political culture, who are not concerned excessively with oneself but cherish collectiveness, oppose frauds, corruption and waste and have the knowledge and will to change this society to a righteous one an opportunity to contest the forthcoming elections in addition to candidates of the JVP. We have invited them to rally with us to change this political culture of vagrants and become candidates of our party. Developing the minds should start from childhood and changing the political culture too should begin at a grassroots level. The JVP has already begun a long journey of changing the country. We invite all those who like to become partners in changing this society to a righteous one to become candidates of our party.”
