The government, accepting, on the surface, that SAITM should be abolished but merely changes its name and carries out a manipulation to continue maintaining is an attempt to deceive the whole country states the JVP in a press release regarding the communiqué issued by the government as a solution for the SAITN issue.
Throughout the past government had stated that SAITM would never be abolished. However, with this series of proposals the government, for the first time, has accepted that SAITM should be abolished which is a victory for those who struggled against SAITM states the JVP.
The press release:
Government proposals are a fraud – SAITM should be abolished.
The government has put forward a series of proposals to solve the issue regarding the controversial SAITM stating it is its final solution. The government, based on the series of proposals put forward by the Government Information Department, states a solution has been given to the issue by closing down SAITM.
Throughout the past government, authorities stated that SAITM would never be abolished. With this series of proposals the government, for the first time, has accepted that SAITM should be abolished. It is a victory for all those who struggle to get SAITM abolished. However, the government, despite accepting, on the surface, that SAITM should be abolished, merely changes its name and carries out a manipulation to continue maintaining it which is an attempt to deceive the whole country.
According to the series of proposals of the government, the name of SAITM is to be changed. Also, the private ownership of SAITM is to be changed. However, selling the medical degree would not be changed.
The main demand of the people, the students’ movement, parents of medical students and teachers of medical faculties was to immediately stop selling the medical degree and abolish SAITM. However, the so-called solution put forward by the government yesterday (29th) is not abolishing SAITM or not stopping the selling of medical degrees. Instead, the name of SAITM would be changed and selling of the medical degree would be handed over to a new ownership. Changing the name of SAITM, its ownership and stating a few students would be given scholarships are mere ploys to conceal government’s deceitful act.
However, we, considering the government stating, nominally at least, that SAITM would be abolished is a step forward in the struggle against SAITM, demand the government to consider the proposals put forward recently by teachers of medical faculties and take steps to abolish SAITM.
