A seminar in connection with privatization of education in the South Asian region was held concurrent with the 19th World Festival of Youth and Students being held in Sochi in Russia.
The National Organizer of the Socialist Students’ Union (SSU) Rangana Devapriya participated in the seminar. The youth representatives who participated put forward information and views regarding issues that exist in the education sectors of their countries.
Attention has been paid to the crisis that exists in the higher education sector in Sri Lanka and the struggle being carried out to protect free education in the country. Special attention has been drawn to the crisis created by SAITM, the illegal institute at Malabe that sells medical degrees.
The Secretary of the International Affairs of the Socialist Students Union (SSU) Miss Madhu Sankalpana has chaired the seminar.
Meanwhile, a forum regarding the struggle being carried out by the students’ movement on behalf of free and qualitative education, health education science, culture and means of obtaining free and universal information was participated by the National Organizer of the JVP Bimal Rathnayaka.
At the forum Mr. Rathnayaka has presented a comparative analysis regarding the Soviet Union and Russia today, education in Sri Lanka, issue confronted by it and the struggle being carried out by the students’ movement in Sri Lanka.
A banner declaring solidarity with the struggle against controversial SAITM institute was signed by participants.
