The UK, France and Germany have said they will stand by the Iran nuclear deal which US President Donald Trump has threatened to tear apart.
The leaders of France, Germany and the UK said in a joint statement that they were all “committed” to the deal and were “concerned by the possible implications” of Mr Trump’s refusal to recertify it.
The deal, signed in 2015, is between the UK, the US, Russia, France, Germany, and China to impose curbs on Iran’s nuclear programme in return for an easing of international sanctions.
However, Trump called Iran a “fanatical regime” and said it had violated the terms of the deal. He accused Iran of sponsoring terrorism, and proposed new sanctions. International observers say Iran has been in full compliance with the agreement.
Meanwhile, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said the US was “more isolated than ever”. And said Trump may not be aware that this agreement is not a bilateral agreement solely between Iran and the United States. He warned that his country could abandon its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers within hours if the United States keeps on imposing new sanctions.
“Those who try to return to the language of threats and sanctions are prisoners of their past delusions,” Rouhani said in a televised address.
