Seven suspects including ‘Swiss Kumar, ’the chief suspect arrested over the rape and murder of Vidya Sivaloganthan, the schoolgirl from Jaffna, have been sentenced to death by the three-bench Trial-at-bar. In addition to the death penalty, the suspects were sentenced to a further 30 years in prison.The suspects were also ordered to pay Rs 1 million as compensation to the victim’s family.
The three bench Trial-at-bar included Jaffna High Court Judge Manickavasagar Ilancheliyan, Vavuniya High Court Judge Balendran Shashi Mahendran and Trincomalee High Court Judge Annalingam Premashankar.
18-year-old Vidya Sivaloganathan was found raped and murdered on the 13 of May in 2015 leading to a protest in the Jaffna town following which the nine suspects were arrested.
This is the first time a three bench Trial-at-bar was heard outside Colombo.
Vidya’s mother was also present at the Jaffna High Court when the verdict of the case was announced.
