President Maithripala Sirisena’s brother Lal Sirisena, who surrendered to Polonnaruwa Police yesterday (10th) in connection with the accident that occurred in Hingurakgoda area when the motorbike ridden by a member of the JVP and his brother was run over by a luxury vehicle, was remanded till the 11th when he was produced before Polonnaruwa magistrates Court.
In the accident two brothers, 48-year old A.J.M. Jayaratna and 58-year-old A.J.M. Buddhadasa were killed.
Mr Buddhadasa was a kidney patient and the two brothers were returning home at Hingurakgoda when their motorbike was run over at 1.30 a.m. yesterday by the vehicle that had been driven at a high speed behind them.
At the time of the accident President’s brother Lal Sirisena had driven the vehicle but he had fled eh scene after the accident. Later, in the evening Mr Lal Sirisena had surrendered to police with the vehicle and an attempt had been made to produce another person as the driver of the vehicle who had been driving at the time of the accident. However, this could not be done as eye witnesses had already given evidence that Mr Lal Sirisena had driven the vehicle.
