President Maithripala Sirisena has appointed Former Additional Solicitor General and President’s Counsel Kapila Waidyaratne as the new Defense Secretary. Mr. Widyaratne was appointed to the post today (4th) following the resignation of Mr. Karunasena Hettiarachchi. Waidyaratne was educated at S. Thomas’ College, Mt Lavinia. He graduated from the University of Colombo and the Sri Lanka Law College.
Meanwhile, Secretary to the President, Austin Fernando Austin Fernando assumed duties as President’s Secretary before President Maithripala Sirisena today.
Mr. Austin Fernando was the governor for the Eastern Province but he resigned from his post in order to accept the post as President’s Secretary.
He was a Defense Ministry Secretary from 2001 to 2004 and President Sirisena’s advisor since 2015.
President Maithripala Sirisena also appointed Army Chief of Staff Major General Mahesh Senanayaka as the new Army Commander. He was promoted to the rank of Lt. General prior to the appointment as the 22nd commander of the Sri Lanka Army. Mahesh Senanayake served as the Security Forces Commander in Jaffna and also the Colonel of the Special Forces Regiment. He was enlisted to the Sri Lanka Army in 1981.
