The joint opposition group including the retired president Mahinda Rajapaksa carrying on a protest campaign pointing out a constitution that has not been framed is not correct says the Mahanayaka and Anunayaka Theros of Malwatta and Asgiriya Chapters adding that it is futile to prepare birth certificates for infants in mothers’ wombs.
The prelates made these observations when former Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa visited the Mahanayaka and Anunayaka Theros in Kandy.
The Mahinda faction had got the Mahanayakas to release a statement against formulating a new constitution after showing them certain documents said to be prepared for a new constitution. However, the President and the Prime Minister explained that not even a draft had been prepared for a new constitution and if such a move is undertaken the prelates would be informed and their advice sought.
The Constitutional Council has received certain suggestions but no new constitution has been compiled yet. The whole Parliament acts as a Constituent Assembly which is divided into six sub-committees. A draft that includes certain information has been forwarded to the Council but no draft of a constitution has been compiled yet.
