The government should take immediate steps to solve the crisis confronted by local dairy industry if not his organization would not hesitate to take to the streets with dairy farmers says the National Organizer of All Ceylon Farmers’ Federation Namal Karunaratna. He said this speaking at a press conference held at a dairy farm at Dambulla.
At present large quantities of milk collected from farmers are being thrown away but the subject Minister P Hariison has no programme to utilize this milk in a useful industry pointed out Mr. Karunaratna.
He said the construction of the new factory at Ambewela was completed in 2015 but it has not been commissioned yet. If production started in the factory 300,000 liters of milk could be used to produce milk powder he pointed out.
The National Organizer of All Ceylon Farmers’ Federation said funds are not properly credited to the accounts maintained by dairy farmers and they find it difficult to pay the salaries of their employees.
He said 2000 cattle were imported by the government to be distributed among dairy farmers. 5600 farmers sent in application to buy cattle at the price of Rs.200,000 each. However, only 19 people have been given cattle said Mr. Karunaratna.
He said Minister P. Harrison is involved in a racket using his political powers. Cows had been given to those who are not involved in dairy farming he pointed out.
He said just as paddy was given to paddy racketeers the cattle too have been given at cheap rates and pointed out that Lakshman Wasantha Perera who is involved in liquor industry has been given 400 cattle.
