
Today (15th) marks one year since the death of Mr. Somawansa Amarasinghe, a former Leader of the JVP. At the time of his death Mr. Somawansa Amarasinghe, a leader of the revolutionary politics in Sri Lanka, was 73 years old. After the 1971 uprising Mr. Somawansa Amarasinghe with the founder of the JVP Mr. Rohana Wijeweera contributed to build the JVP. He was a very special personality in Sri Lankan politics.
Mr. Somawansa Amarasinghe joined the JVP in 1969, was imprisoned after the 1971 uprising. However, the government had to release him with the revoking of Criminal Justice Commission. After 1977 he joined Mr. Rohana Wijeweera’s task of rebuilding the JVP. He went abroad after the brutal suppression of the JVP during the 88/89 period and later he became the leader of the party. He was the Leader of the JVP from 1990 until 2014.
