A silent protest was held opposite the recycling center at Karadiyana today (22nd) with the participation of people’s representatives, Maha Sangha and residents to oppose authorities for dumping garbage, extending the stipulated volume, dumping without grading, not inspecting the current situation of the garbage mound at Karadiyana and weakening the recycling process.
OICs of Boralesgamuwa and Piliyandala police stations had taken measures to obtain enjoining orders to prevent the agitations. However, the agitation was carried out without violating the court orders said the JVP Member of the Provincial Council Lakshman Nipunarachchi.
The authorities had taken measures to dump garbage in vehicles that were not assigned for such process and it is illegal as well as an offence of contempt of court said Mr. Nipunarachchi. He said dumping garbage without grading hinders the recycling process and pointed out as an Army hospital is being constructed near the site dumping garbage near a hospital would be a health hazard.
He said the Japanese team that has come to investigate Meethotamulla garbage dump has stated that there could be an explosion at any moment due to a high concentration of a gas in the area and this could happen at Karadiyana as well as the garbage dump has become as massive as the one at Meethotamulla.
He said authorities should immediately stop dumping garbage at Karadiyana and find a solution for the garbage crisis.
Incidentally Mr. Lakshman Nipunarachchi has been summoned by Nugegoda Magistrates Court and Kesbawa Magistrates Court for earlier protests against dumping garbage in residential areas.
