
Seven including the Western Provincial Councilor of the JVP Lakshman Nipunarachchi who were summoned by Court for violating a court order and prevented garbage being dumped at Karadiyana were acquitted by Kesbawa Magistrate Gihan Ranawaka stating the seven were not the accused in relation to the incident.
At the hearing all the lawyers present in Court represented the seven including Mr. Lakshman Nipunarachchi and Attorney at Law Gunasena Hewage told Court that those he represents went to the garbage dump on the 19th not to violate a court order but to inform the management of the dump that more garbage than the amount ordered by the Court had been dumped.
The court order issued on the 17th for the garbage management authority states only 350 metric tons could be dumped at the site from the 17th to the 28th. However, by 19th more than 800 metric tons had been dumped at the site pointed out the lawyer. He said the accused pointed this to the police officers and they turned the lorries with garbage back without allowing them to dump garbage at the site.
The lawyer said the accused had not committed any crime but they had come to the site to fulfill their responsibility as representatives of the people.
Magistrate Gihan Ranawaka acquitted Mr. Nipunarachchi and other accused. A large crowd was present in court premises and outside it to support Mr. Nipunarachchi and the other accused.
