(2nd edition) Wimal Weerawansa’s bail application filed pleading bail has been rejected by Colombo Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne today (3rd). Counsel appearing for Weerawansa had filed the bail application requesting bail for Weerawansa stating that his daughter was undergoing treatment at a state hospital due to bad mental health condition after her father was remanded.
However, the Magistrate said that there were no sufficient reports in court to explain the health condition of the suspect’s daughter.
Weerawansa commenced a hunger strike while in custody and later decided to end it. He was admitted to the prisons hospital on 26th March and later was transferred to the Colombo National Hospital.
Weerawansa was arrested on 10th January by the FCID on charges of misusing several vehicles belonging to the Presidential Secretariat Office, during his tenure as the Minister of Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities, and thereby causing losses to the tune of Rs. 41 million to the government.
After Wimal Weerawansa was re-remanded till 7th April a new bail application was submitted by Shavindra Fernando PC, the counsel for Weerawansa. The Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne put off the decision of this application till the 7th April.
