Somali pirates have released the hijacked oil tanker with its eight Sri Lankan crew. International media reports the release of the ship and the crew that occurred yesterday (16th) was the first without any ransom since 2012.
There was a gun fight before the release between pirates and maritime police force for Somalia’s semi-autonomous northern region of Puntland.
Naval forces have now boarded it and were escorting the ship to Bossaso port, the region’s commercial hub. The pirates were not arrested and were allowed to leave.
