A drug that could subdue cancer has been discovered in an experiment carried out at University of Peradeniya using seeds of bitter gourd (momordica charantia).
An experiment carried out by a team from the Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Science of University of Peradeniya lead by Prof. Jayantha Rajapaksa has revealed bitter gourd seeds have the ability to destroy cancer cells.
Prof. Rajapaksa said the chemical Alfa Eleostearic fatty acid that contains in biter gourd seeds destroy cancer cells and this chemical is extracted from the seeds and a capsule has been made.
He has said Alfa Eleostearic fatty acid doesn’t get destroyed due to heat and the seeds could be eaten after they are fried in a pan which would act to kill cancer cells.
Using the drug for cancer patients in Kandy General Hospital has proved that it is a successful cure for cancer.
