The attempt by a small clique of moneyed people and several corrupt politicians to undermine educational institutions in the country would be defeated by rallying all progressive forces says the National Organizer of the JVP Parliamentarian Bimal Rathnayaka.
Mr. Rathnayaka said this at a press conference held at the head office of the JVP at Pelawatta yesterday (1st). The National Organizer of the Socialist Students’ Union (SSU) Rangana Devapriya was also present.
Mr. Rathnayaka said the conspiracy to legalize the degree awarded by SAITM private medical school is an attempt to erode education in the country but the progressive people would not allow that to be committed by a handful of reactionaries.
He said it was not the court but President Sirisena’s government that was responsible for the verdict permitting the registration of SAITM medical graduates with the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC). Mr. Ratnayake said permission had been granted to a corrupt and an illegal institute by the Rajapaksa regime which was bent, like the present administration, in privatizing education.
He said the verdict was expected my many as both the plaintiff and respondents in the case were those who accept SAITM private medical school. He said the Health Minister had publicly informed the court through the parliament regarding the Health Ministry’s decision to continue backing the legalizing of SAITM.
Mr. Rathnayaka said facts from both sides were not presented to the court as the requests made by 13 organizations including the GMOA and Dental Association to be part of the case were turned down. He claimed that the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) had to act as the party presenting facts on behalf of the health minister.
