It is reported that the Ministry of Rural Economy has decided to release paddy to small and medium scale rice mill owners. The registration necessary for issuing paddy is being carried out at present.
All Ceylon Farmers’ Federation, United Rice Producers Association and Small and Medium scale Rice Mill Owners have continuously demanded the government to release paddy stocks in government stores so that they could supply rice at low cost to the market.
The President of Rice Producers Association Muditha Perera, speaking to the media regarding the decision of the Ministry of Rural Economy to release paddy to small and medium scale rice mill owners, said the government has already released large stocks of paddy that were in government’s stores to large scale mill owners and brokers and also has taken necessary steps to import rice. He said small and medium scale mill owners expect to receive paddy stocks and release rice at a cheaper rate to give relief to consumers. However, still registration of small and medium scale mills are being carried out and no paddy has been released to them he added.
He said once rice from large scale mill owners, imported rice and rice prepared by small and medium scale mill owners come to the market it would be time for the next paddy season. Then there would be a shortage of rice in the market and it would not be possible to avoid the price of rice going up again during that season he added.
