Bimal meets Sri Lankans in Sweden

The National Organizer of the JVP Parliamentarian Bimal Rathnayaka who is in Sweden to participate in the 18th Congress of the Communist Party of Sweden has participated in a meeting of Sri Lankans at Stockholm on the 8th.

The members of the JVP and its supporters have participated.
He has also organized to hold several seminars under the theme “Why Sri Lanka needs a genuine change” in several cities in Sweden, Denmark and Germany say reports.

Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake has said that foreigners investing a minimum amount of US$ 300,000 individually in Sri Lanka would be issued with two to five year Resident Visas.
He said the budget 2016 passed in Parliament included granting resident visas to foreign individuals who bring a large amount of foreign exchange into the country and added the cabinet has already approved the Special Deposits Account Act.
Political analysts say ‘offshore’ financing is a method of whitening of black money and these moneyed foreigners come in especially in order to take advantage of lower taxes or costs or less stringent regulations.
Recently, individuals and companies that had taken advantage of such facilities in Bermuda were revealed. Antigua,.Bahamas and Costa Rica.are some such countries that have made whitening black money part of their economies.
Minister Karunanayake has said that the government has already received over 5000 applications of foreign nationals who have expressed their interest to invest in Sri Lanka

Don’t intervene to release Weerawansa – Ranjan tells PM

Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake says Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe should not interfere to get remanded former Minister of Mahinda Rajapaksa regime Wimal Weerawansa released.
He said the Prime Minister may get phone calls requesting him to intervene in the case but should not respond to those.
Once when Wimal Weerawansa was arrested for attempting to go abroad with a fake passport he was released without any legal action. UPFA Parliamentarian Udaya Gammanpila said UPFA Parliamentarians phoned Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and got Weerawansa released.
Mr. Ramanayake told media despite People of this country expecting President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to be tough leaders, they have not shown any tough qualities as they have not taken measures to expedite legal action against wrong doers.

Influenza H1N1 closes ward in Kandy Hospital

Hospital Director Saman Ratnayake says that Ward 69 of the Kandy Teaching Hospital was closed after three patients in the ward died due to Influenza H1N1.
Three kidney patients being treated at the ward were the patients who died of the virus and the Director of the Hospital has advised kidney patients, pregnant women, children and those with compromised immune systems not to visit the hospital unless for emergency attention and requested anyone with fever or symptoms of Influenza to seek treatment temporarily at other hospitals.
All other patients in the ward have been transferred with special attention to a special unit said the Director and added the hospital staff and other patients will be tested for the presence of the virus.

School exam time table released

The Department of Examinations has released the time table for school examinations for this year.
The GCE A/L examination will be held from 8th August to 2nd September. Grade 5 scholarship examination will be held on Sunday 20th August.
GCE O/L examination is to be held from 12th to 21st December.

No prison food for Weerawansa

It is reported that the request made to get all three meals from his home by National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader MP Wimal Weerawansa who has been remanded for misusing vehicles belonging to Presidential Secretariat during Mahinda Rajapaksa regime has been granted by prison authorities.
The Prison Department media spokesman Thushara Upul Deniya said a request made by Mr. Weerawansa’s wife to bring food was granted as it is a privilege for any prisoner.
