They would not agree to hold the local government election under the preferencial voting system say UPFA Mahinda faction MPs Dinesh Gunawardene and Udaya Gammanpila.
Recently, the Leader of the JVP Chief Opposition Whip Anura Dissanayaka proposed in Parliament to hold the local government elections under the preferential system as they are being postponed citing various reasons. Parliamentarians Dallas Alahapperuma and Rauf Hakeem expressed their approval for the proposal.
The Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella said if the Mahinda faction, the JVP and the SLMC agree to the proposal holding elections under the preferential system could be considered.
However, Parliamentarians Dinesh Gunawardena and Udaya Gammanpila have stated to the media that they would not agree to the approval Parliamentarian Alahapperuma has given in Parliament stating they are against holding the local government elections under the old system.
