The surveying of 15,000 acres from Hambanthota to be handed over for Chinese investment projects has been temporally halted says the Secretary to the Ministry of Lands I.H.K. Mahanama.
Speaking to the media Mr. Mahanama said he has received instructions to temporarily halt surveying of the lands due to people’s opposition to the move.
The Collective to Protect Rights of People in Hambantota commenced protest campaigns against government’s move to hand over 15,000 acres from Hambanthota and two massive protest campaigns were held on the 14th and 23rd against the move to hand over lands to Chinese investors.
Also, a door to door people’s awareness programme was also launched by the JVP headed by its Political Bureau Member K.D. Lal Kantha on the 19th to make the people in the area aware of the precariousness of the move of the government to hand over lands to foreigners.
