“Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa has a right to daydream. The statement he makes here and there are made merely to satisfy his followers but not made with any responsibility as a former leader of the country,” says the National Organizer of All Ceylon Farmers’ Federation and JVP Member of North Western Provincial Council Namal Karunaratna.
He said this in response to a question posed by a journalist at a press conference held at Dambulla yesterday (30th) regarding the statement made by Mr. Mahinda Rajapaka at a discussion he had with foreign correspondent in Sri Lanka. Mr. Rajapaksa had said he would topple the present government in 2017.
Speaking further Mr. Karunaratna said to topple the government Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa will have to get a majority in parliament, which means he will have to get the support of 113 MPs. He will have to find 75 new MPs. Where could he find those MPs? He will have to buy them as he did in the past. We don’t know whether he intends buying MPs from the money he amassed through various illegal deals. Otherwise he will have to wait until a general election. The next general election is due in 2020.
The politics Mahinda Rajapaksa carried out is a ‘deal’ politics. He avoided important acts and bills presented in Parliament. He didn’t vote against the budget. He got his followers to support provincial councils to pass the budgets. His strategy is to carry out a kind of politics to avoid corruption allegations aimed at his family. The statements he makes are a strategy to deceive masses,” said Mr. Karunaratna.
