It is reported that Maithri – Ranil administration is planning to censor websites claiming new laws would be enacted against social media websites that are a threat to national security.
As there are no laws and regulations to control websites active in cyberspace in the country the ‘good governance’ government is planning to present an Act in Parliament to control the cyberspace. According to the Act steps against social media websites would be taken through telephone companies that supply internet facilities.
A senior minister has told media that telephone companies that provide facilities for websites that are offensive to the country are responsible for such websites and the government would bring in laws to take action against telephone companies that violate such laws.
Former Mahinda Rajapaksa regime too had banned several websites active in the country as well as internationally labeling them as a threat to national security.
