High Court has given permission for the request made by former Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa to go abroad. Mr. Basil Rajapaksa is accused of misappropriation of public assets, frauds and corruption and it is stated that he has sought permission to go abroad on the pretext of getting medical treatment.
He is getting ready to go to the USA when investigations are being carried out regarding serious instances of frauds, corruption said to have committed by him.
High Court Judge Mrs. Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena after considering the request allowed former minister Basil Rajapaksa to travel to the United States for three months for medical purposes between 10th December and 2nd March, 2017 on a surety of Rs 2.5 million.
There are several cases filed against Basil Rajapaksa in several courts and investigations are being carried out regarding the lands he owns. It has also been revealed that members of Rajapaksa family including Basil Rajapaksa possess several properties in the USA. Meanwhile the Attorney General filed fresh indictment against Bsil Rajapaksa yesterday (7th) in connection with misuse of state funds when he was the Minister of Economic Affairs.
Activists of civil society organizations who were active to bring ‘yahapalana’ government to power have expressed their opposition to Basil Rajapaksa, who was very active in the joint opposition to form a new political party, suddenly asking permission to go abroad for three months for medical treatment and court granting such a request.
At a ceremony held recently and attended by President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe the Leader of the JVP Anura Dissanayaka in his speech said a vicious circle exists in the country and some members of the judiciary too are connected to this circle.
