Largest haul of cocaine seized in Asia in Colombo Harbour

The stock of cocaine seized from Colombo Harbour is said to be the biggest such stock seized in South Asia say police.

The market value of the stock of 800 kilograms of cocaine seized from Colombo Harbour is about Rs.12000 million stated DIG Ajith Rohana at a press conference held at Police Headquarters.
The chip containing the stock of cocaine has sailed from Ecuador to Belgium, Saudi Arabia and had reached Colombo Harbour yesterday (8th) on its way to India.
When Police Narcotics Bureau received information regarding the stock of cocaine the containers were searched on a warrant received from Court. The stock of cocaine was found hidden in a container of teak timber.

COPE report on bond scam to be taken after the budget

State Minister of Finance Lakshman Yapa Abeywardana has said the action to be taken regarding the Treasury bond scam would be taken up for debate on priority basis at the new Parliamentary session that would commence after the budget debate.

The State Minister has said this at a discussion held in the Ministry of Finance.

DEW meets President

The Leader of the Sri Lanka Communist Party D.E.W. Gunasekera and a delegation from the party have had a discussion with President Maithripala Sirisena in President’s official residence today (9th).

The current political situation and future political moves have been discussed at the meeting.
The Secretary General of UPFA Mahinda Amaraweera too has participated in the discussion.

19 including Keppetipola declared National Heroes

President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday (8th) cancelled the Gazette issued by British imperialists on 10th January, 1818 listing 19 who had been named as traitors and declared them as National Heroes who fought for the freedom of the country.

The 19 National Heroes are Keppetipola Disawe, Kiwlegedara Mohottale, Godagedara Rate Adikaram, Ketakala Mohottaale, Maha Bethmaraale, Kuda Bethmaraale, Polgolla Mohottaale, Watte Kale Mohottaale, Polgahagedara Rehenaraale, Posrewatta Vidane, Yalagombe Mohottaale, Udumadure Mohottaale, Kohukumbure Rateraale, Kohukumbure Walawwe Mohottaale, Butuwe Rateraale, Baginigahawela Rateraala, Mahabadulle Gammane Rateraale, Bulupitiye Mohottaale and Palle Melheyaye Gamethiraale.
The British Governor Robert Brownrigg on 10th January, 1818 named 19 Kandyan leaders as traitors due to their involvement in the Uva – Wellassa uprising against British imperialists in 1818
