Colombo Fort Magistrate Miss Lanka Jayaratna has given FCID permission to get bank statements regarding Rs.4,012 million given to a Chinese company to carry out a project to divert Nilwala and Gin rivers. This project, however, was never implemented.
The estimate for the project had been US$690 and Rs.4012 million had been paid even before the project commenced states the complaint.
The Treasury had released a check for Rs.3012 million on 7th January – the day before the presidential election – on behalf of the proposed Nilwala project but what happened to this money is not known said President Maithripala Sirisena at a meeting in Galle recently. The President asked how could a check for such an amount be released the day before an election and said it was certainly a suspicious transaction and should be investigated.
Rs.1000 million had been released to a Chinese company for a ‘Nilwala project’ in 2012 and not a single sod of soil had been cut for the project said the President.
The convener of ‘Voice Against Corruption’ – the JVP Member for North Central Provincial Council – Wasantha Samarasinghe was the first to complain regarding the massive financial crime that had been committed.
