The Prime Minister was responding to a questione raised by the Chief Whip of the Opposition JVP Leader Anura Dissanayaka regarding the sluggish manner the investigations regarding attacks and murders carried out on journalists during the previous regime are being conducted and pressure exerted on media institutions including ‘Sunday Times’ and ‘Derana’.
The Prime Minister further said he or the President would not need to set fire to media institutions, abduct editors, deploy security personnel to assault journalists or murder them. The Prime Minister said he and the President would publicly praise the media when they deserve praise.
Mr. Anura Dissanayaka also raised the issue of journalists’ salaries stating their salaries should be raised.
