‘Women for Rights’ opposes budget 2017

November 30, 2016 by NHL Werasinghe Leave a Comment

The allocation from the budget 2017 for the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs has been severely slashed states ‘Women for Rights’ organization.

Speaking at a press conference held in Colombo the General Secretary of the Organization Mrs. Samanmali Gunasinghe said, “The vote for the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs was presented to Parliament today and it showed that the allocation for the Ministry had been severely slashed. The government attempts to get Rs.790 million for 28 ministries by presenting a supplementary estimate but a large amount of money has been slashed from allocation to the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs when compared with the budgets of 2015 and 2016. This is a country where violations against women and children are committed on a large scale. The money to give relief to victims of this violence has been slashed.
The allocations for 2015 was Rs.2464 million and Rs.10,201 million was allocated in 2016 for the Ministry. However, only Rs. 2698 million has been allocated for 2017.
Also, Rs.142 million had been allocated to take measures to curb violence against women and children. This has been severely slashed and only Rs.50 million has been allocated for next year.
Violence against women and children, abuse, harm and rape have increased in the country and institutions such as Women’s Bureau and Children’s Secretariat have been established to build a future for victims of such crimes and give them relief. However, slashing of allocations hinders the affairs of these institutions. The government that calls itself ‘good governance’ is deceiving the people. Women for Rights, as an organization that represents women and children, opposes the budget 2017 presented by the government.
Several representatives of ‘Rights for Women’ also spoke.
