The Parliament tensed up when the Minister of Finance responded today to the question posed by JVP Leader Anura Dissanayaka in Parliament yesterday (17th). Mr. Dissanayaka asked the Minister whether renting cars for 58 government MPs spending Rs. 2430 million while the expected income from VAT is only Rs. 1800 million.
Minister Karunanayaka said government MPs work unlike the MPs of the opposition and making available cars for them is necessary. He also said cars are imported by a private company and eh government doesn’t incur any loss but gain taxes for the cars imported.
Whether the company spends for importing cars by getting money from abroad was not told by the Minister.
