It is reported that President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to appoint a Parliamentary Select Committee to oversee arrests and legal action taken against political VIPs and senior state officials.
This committee has to be informed before any political VIP or a senior state official is arrested by the CID or the FCID and act according to its instructions state political sources.
It is stated that the step to appoint this committee has been taken to regulate arrests and legal action taken against political VIPs and senior state officials.
However, political analysts say the move is a hindrance to the investigations being carried out against those who were and are involved in various frauds, corruption and crimes and would discourage the institutions such as the CID, FCID and Bribery Commission in conducting their investigations.
The decision is a move against the mandate given by the people at the Presidential election point out analysts adding that more than 6.2 million people who voted against frauds, corruption and crime would be severely disappointed with the move. Also, it will disgruntle the institutions carrying out investigations against the fraudsters, the corrupt and criminals. It looks as if President Maithripala Sirisena’s contempt at the bribery Commission, the CID and the FCID has been put into action say analysts.
