The decision not to go ahead with the construction of the destructive coal power plant at Sampur is a victory for the people says convener of Eastern People’s Voice and Member of Green Trinco Organization Arun Hemechandra.
Mr. Hemachandra made this observation when speaking regarding the directive announced by the Court today (13th) on the petition filed in Supreme Court by Green Trinco Organization stating the construction of the coal power plant violates fundamental rights. The Supreme Court had asked for the view of the Attorney General and the Attorney General has informed Court that Ministry Secretary Amaranath Batagoda had informed the AG that the Ministry would not go ahead with the building of the coal power plant in Sampur as earlier planned.
Mr. Arun Hemachandra further said the government had to abandon the project due to opposition from Eastern People’s Voice, Green Trinco Organization and the people and the withdrawal of the project is a victory for the people.
Eastern People’s Voice and the JVP complained to the Human Rights Commission on 5th February that people’s fundamental rights are violated due to the project and building the power plant would be a disaster for the environment.
The petition was heard by a panel of Judges that included Chief Justice K. Sri Pawan and Supreme Court Judge Priyantha Jayawardene.
